About this attraction
Everything you need to know about Castel Sant'Angelo
Castel Sant'Angelo has been, in its 2,000-year history, an imperial mausoleum (built by Hadrian in 139 AD to hold his ashes), a medieval papal fortress, a Renaissance prison where Galileo was held, and now a museum and one of the greatest viewpoints in Rome.
The rooftop offers one of the most extraordinary panoramas in the city โ the Tiber below, St Peter's dome directly opposite, the Prati neighbourhood stretching north. The walk through the building is a journey through 2,000 years of Roman history in a single structure.
