Napoleon's great triumphal arch — the centrepiece of the most famous avenue in the world. Built between 1806 and 1836 to honour the soldiers of the French Republic and Empire, the Arc de Triomphe stands at the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, where twelve avenues radiate outward like a star — a design by Baron Haussmann that gives Paris its distinctive urban geometry.
Climb the 284 steps to the rooftop terrace and you'll be rewarded with one of the most extraordinary views in the city — the Champs-Élysées stretching below you, the La Défense skyline on the horizon, and the Eiffel Tower rising above the western rooftops. At street level, don't miss the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the arch, where a flame has burned continuously since 1921.
